Across 246 real quotes we have analysed, the median battery only installation came to $18,036 before rebates. A combined solar and battery system came to $28,228. The federal battery rebate then takes thousands off. Every figure on this page comes from quotes Australians actually received, as at July 2026, not from installer price lists.
These quotes had no solar bundled in, so the totals are the clean cost of buying and installing a battery. Prices are before rebates, including GST. The middle half column shows the spread between the cheapest quarter and the dearest quarter of quotes, per kWh of capacity.

Two patterns stand out. Bigger batteries are much cheaper per kWh, roughly $586 per kWh at 30 kWh and above versus $1,113 per kWh in the 15 to 20 kWh range. And the spread within each size is wide. Two quotes for the same capacity can differ by thousands of dollars, which is exactly why checking your quote against the market matters.
Most quotes we see bundle solar and a battery in one total: 202 of the 246 quotes in our data. The median combined system, typically around 10.4 kW of solar with a battery, came to $28,228 before rebates, with the middle half of quotes falling between $22,307 and $33,728. If you are pricing a popular combination like a 9.9 kW solar system with a battery, that is the range to sanity check against.
The Cheaper Home Batteries Program discounts the installed price based on usable capacity. As at July 2026 the rates are about $271 per kWh for the first 14 kWh, $162 per kWh up to 28 kWh, then $40 per kWh up to 50 kWh. The rates step down every year to 2030, so a quote's rebate depends on its install date. Rough estimates:

To qualify, the battery must be on the Clean Energy Council approved product list, be VPP capable if it connects to the grid, and be installed by an accredited installer. Only one battery per property gets the rebate, and it is claimed once. Some states stack their own schemes on top. Full terms are on the program page.
Beyond size, four things explain most of the spread between quotes. Brand tier: premium brands carry a real premium over value brands for the same capacity. Usable versus nominal capacity: two 13.5 kWh batteries can store different amounts you can actually use, so always compare on usable kWh. The inverter: adding a battery to existing solar sometimes needs a new hybrid inverter or a separate battery inverter, which can add thousands. And the installation itself: switchboard upgrades, three phase homes and backup circuits all add cost.
